Peter's Beginning
Peter, what a man of God. When we were first introduced to him, he came on the scene as a Fisherman and followed Jesus upon Jesus' request. We know of Peter as being the only disciple that stepped out onto the water and walked on it for a bit before his faith wavered.
I leave you all with this verse found in Titus 2:14 "Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works."

Peter was a talker. He was passionate and did not hold his tongue. He wanted to know what Jesus meant when he spoke in Parables. He wanted to proclaim his love for Jesus at all times.
Peter's Problem
But there was an attitude in Peter that Jesus's crucifixion dealt with. Peter was a man prone to emotions and feelings rather than what Jesus said. He was not being intentionally disrespectful but he was so sure of his feelings he sometimes inadvertently called Jesus a liar.
In Matthew 16: 21-23 we see Peter rebuking Jesus after Jesus tells the disciples that he will be taken and killed but then will rise again on the third day. Peter didn't focus on the rise again portion of what Jesus said but used his emotions to respond to the part about being killed. His emotions would tell him that no good can come of Jesus' death and so he must pronounce his rebuke and disdain for what Jesus just said.
Can you imagine rebuking the Lord? A part of me would fear some fire and brimstone, lol. But really think about it, how often do we inadvertently rebuke Jesus when we're not following what his word tells us to do. To rebuke a person means to express harsh criticism or disapproval of what's being said. So when the word tells us to pray, read the word, follow Jesus and so forth and we do the opposite, are we not rebuking God? What about when we refuse to tithe, assemble with other believers, continue to fornicate, curse and lie...surely we're calling Jesus a liar and rebuking his word at this point...right?
In Mark 14: 27-31 Jesus tells his disciples after they had their last supper together that they will all be offended by him during the night of his crucifixion. Here comes Peter speaking out saying that the rest might do it but he wont. Then Jesus informs Peter that he will deny him 3 times the same night and Peter responds with more passion about how he would never do such a thing, then the rest of the disciples chime in.
Jesus again, preparing the disciples and telling them of the future, is met with Peter's reaction and passion. Peter at the moment he was in, probably felt very loyal and loving towards Jesus and couldn't imagine denying his Lord.
However, what Peter teaches us is that we must not rely on our emotions and must trust the word of God. We might not feel what God is telling us in his word, we might think we know better based on how we feel. We might think it's ok to fornicate because we love the person and it will turn into marriage. We might think it's ok to lie because we're helping someone out. We might think it's ok to skip church because God is everywhere and we don't need to belong to a church. We might think it's ok to not tithe because that's an old testament law anyways. But instead of thinking and feeling, let's ask ourselves in these "Peter rebuking" type scenarios in our lives, what does the word say?
What does God say as opposed to how I'm feeling right now? And let us pray to God that we may have the courage to listen to his word versus our own feelings.
Let us pray that we no longer rebuke and call Jesus a liar, but instead we honour his word and do what He has called us to do.
The best thing about Jesus is his redemption. He redeems our souls from hell and he redeems our lives from our shortcomings. After Peter denied Jesus, Jesus didn't disown him. Jesus used Peter as a mighty tool in spreading the Gospel. The Holy Spirit turned that passion and zeal into great works for the Kingdom of God. We see this in the impact of Peter's ministry.
Peter's ministry
Peter wrote a 3 part Epistle filled with great teachings on living this Christian life. The advice put in the Epistle based on the revelations of the Holy Spirit in Peter includes:
1) Having holy speech 1 Peter 1:15 "But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;"
2) Avoiding fleshly lust 1 Peter 2:11 "Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;"
3) Husbands and Wives live well together 1 Peter 3: 1-7 "Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;......7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered."
4) Being aware of Satan 1 Peter 5: 8-9 " Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world."
5) Reminding us that his account is an eyewitness of Jesus 2 Peter 1: 16 "For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty."
6) Jesus will return 2 Peter 3:10 "10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up."

Let us no longer rebuke God and call him a liar. Let us use our passion and zeal to further the work of the Gospel as opposed to furthering our personal feelings and desires.
God is willing and able, and he can turn anything and anyone around.
